Women and Heart Disease Dinner Draws Many from Community

Hickory, N.C. - Approximately 500 men and women turned out for Ready Set Red dinner on Friday, February 3 at the Hickory Metro Convention Center in Hickory, N.C. The event was designed to raise awareness of heart disease in women and was sponsored by the Frye Heart and Stroke Centers.

The dinner coincided with the American Heart Association’s national Go Red for Women Day, designed to be a call to all women to take charge of their health, as well as recognize and reduce their risk for heart disease.

Keynote speaker for the event was New York-based Cardiologist and Author, Dr. Nieca Goldberg. Her most recent book, “The Woman’s Healthy Heart Program: Lifesaving Strategies for Preventing and Healing Heart Disease” was released late January.

Dr. Goldberg presented information about women and cardiovascular disease and the enlightening differences in symptoms for men and women suffering a heart attack.  She also stressed the importance of taking immediate action to reduce ones’ risk of cardiovascular disease.

In addition to Dr. Goldberg, special guests presented their stories of survival. Christy Hamby, a 32 year-old quadruple bypass patient and 54 year-old Creola Dula, a heart attack survivor, shared their stories to a hushed audience.
