Hickory, NC – On October 7, 2006, Frye Regional Medical Center will present the unifour area’s second annual Celebration of Pink, a special evening designed to educate our community on breast cancer awareness and prevention. The event will be held at the Hickory Metro Convention Center from 6 p.m. – 9 p.m.
Keynote speakers Jill Eikenberry and Michael Tucker from the hit TV series LA Law will share their story of battling Jill’s breast cancer together, how that experience changed both of their lives and how they became breast cancer activists. Dr. Terry Sarantou, Medical Director of Frye’s Cancer Center, and Dr. Janet Szabo, radiologist on staff at Frye will highlight technological advancements in detecting breast cancer that Frye has made available to women in the unifour area. WBTV News Anchor Tonia Bendickson will emcee the event. Sheri Lynch, nationally syndicated radio personality from the Bob & Sheri Show on 107.9 the LINK will facilitate the question and answer session with Frye’s panel of staff physicians.
Just before moving to Los Angeles to begin shooting the long running series LA Law with her husband Michael Tucker, Jill Eikenberry performed her first informal breast self-exam and felt a lump. Her doctor confirmed breast cancer and recommended a mastectomy. Eikenberry sought a second opinion. She underwent a lumpectomy and radiation therapy, and her breast was saved.
In 1989, Eikenberry co-produced and hosted an NBC documentary, “Destined to Live.” It featured interviews with cancer survivors, including First Lady Nancy Reagan. Through her involvement with the project, Eikenberry faced her crisis and changed her life. It was the face-to-face confrontation with her mortality, her fear that she could die from breast cancer, that brought Eikenberry not only to make major changes in her life, but to share the results.
Eikenberry, often partnered by her husband, is now a breast cancer activist. Their efforts have been extensively recognized with awards and commendations. They have served as the official spokespersons for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Eikenberry has discovered that through sharing her experiences and being an exponent of constantly improving health, that life can be vibrant and full of self-discovery. She was installed into the Cancer Survivors Hall of Fame in October 2000.
Tickets for Celebration of Pink will be $25.00 per person, payable the day of the event; cash only please. RSVP is required as seating is limited.
