Frye Employee Awarded Nurse of the Year

JoAnn P. Smith, BSN, RN 
Frye Regional Medical Center would like to congratulate JoAnn P. Smith, BSN, RN for being named the 2007 Health Systems Nurse of the Year by the North Carolina Nurses Association at their annual convention held in Raleigh on October 10-12. Ms. Smith has been in the nursing profession for 17 years and is currently the Administrative Director for Nephrology and Oncology at Frye Regional Medical Center. She has been with the Frye in various positions for over 20 years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing and is currently pursuing a master’s in education from the University of North Carolina – Greensboro.

Ms. Smith is an active member of the North Carolina Nurses Association and Oncology Nurses Society and was recently awarded the Super Nova Award presented by her peers for exceeding 12 standards of excellence. She is part of the nursing leadership team, is a cancer center line manager and committee member, was awarded the Komen Grant for establishing a yoga program for breast cancer patients and established the Breast Cancer Navigator program.

Ms. Smith is a member of the Catawba Valley Partnership for End of Life Care, American Cancer Society Relay for Life participant, United Way Family Fair participant, and educational provider for the Carolina Home & Garden Show for Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. She and her husband have two children and live in Claremont.

The North Carolina Nurses Association is the only professional nurses association that represents all registered nurses in the state. Through NCNA, nurses are more powerful advocates for the profession of nursing, their patients, and the citizens of North Carolina.
