Nurse Achieves Bariatric Nursing Certification

Hickory, NC – Frye Regional Medical Center and the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) are pleased to announce that Charles K. “Jock” Stetz, RN, BSN has successfully completed the Certified Bariatric Nurse (CBN) Exam.

Stetz has been a Frye employee for 12 years and has worked on the surgical unit for over 11 years. He has been with the hospital’s bariatrics program since 2001 and served as Bariatric Charge Nurse from 2003-2006. He has been a full time Clinical Bariatric Nurse with Frye’s Surgical Weight Loss Program since January 2007.

Having retired from the United States Army in 1995 after 27 years of service in the U.S., Europe and the Far East, Stetz worked surgical units, critical care, combat support hospitals, MASH units, and taught at the Army Academy of Health Sciences during his military career. His last assignment was for eight years as Head Nurse, Clinical Nurse Specialist, and Assistant Chief Nurse at the U.S. Army Burn Center in San Antonio, TX. He served in Vietnam from 1969 until 1971.

Stetz received his Bachelor in Nursing degree from Fitchburg State College, Fitchburg, MA, and his Masters in Health Services Management from Webster University, St. Louis, MO.

The CBN Examination is designed to assess the professional competence of practitioners of Bariatric Nursing. Achievement of a passing score on the examination is required for an individual to earn the CBN credential. This requires each candidate to demonstrate competence in all technical aspects of Bariatric Nursing commensurate with the standards established by the American Society for Bariatric Surgery (ASBS) for effective and safe patient care.

The CBN credential is issued for a limited term of four years, with certificants being responsible for maintaining and updating their skills and knowledge through continuing education. All candidates and CBN certificants are expected to observe the ASBS Standards of Conduct.
