Volunteers – A Tradition of Caring
Some of the most visible and valuable people at Frye Regional Medical Center are the volunteers. These special people volunteer their time and efforts to help us ensure quality service at Frye. Today, over 250 men and women from Catawba, Caldwell, Alexander and other surrounding counties are members the Frye Volunteer Auxiliary. Frye is always looking for individuals who share their commitment to service to join the Frye family.
Who volunteers at Frye Regional Medical Center?
Volunteers at Frye are men and women, ranging in age from teenage to senior citizen. They are students, homemakers, retirees as well as professionals holding full and part-time jobs who are interested in giving back to their community through volunteerism. Through the program, volunteers have the opportunity to meet new people, develop lasting friendships, take advantage of educational opportunities, and enjoy new experiences. Volunteers work throughout the hospital and have different kinds of responsibilities; but they all have one thing in common: A desire to help others.
The VolunTEEN Program:
During the summer months, interested teenagers have the opportunity to volunteer at Frye Regional Medical Center. Teens are provided with a number of volunteer opportunities including staffing the information desk and gift shop, and providing support to staff and patients in numerous areas of the hospital. Teens must be 14 years of age by June 1 of the year they are volunteering to be eligible. This program offers young people a great opportunity to learn more about health care professions as well as the importance of volunteerism. Volunteer opportunities are also available during the school year.
Why consider becoming a volunteer?
People volunteer at Frye for different reasons. Some want to learn new skills, strengthen old ones, or explore career opportunities in health care. Volunteering involves communicating with people in need, keeping busy, sharing interests, and extending a helping hand. It can be an enlightening and self-fulfilling experience that can contribute to individual growth.
How can you become a volunteer?
It’s easy – simply call the Volunteer Services Department at Frye Regional Medical Center at 828-315-5025 to make an appointment with the Administrative Director of Volunteer Services. New volunteers are required to attend an orientation to introduce you to the program and Frye Regional Medical Center. This program is designed to provide you with the necessary information you will need to safely and effectively volunteer as well as get the most out of your volunteer experience.
Volunteers have the opportunity to serve in numerous hospital departments. Some examples include Same Day Surgery, Obstetrics, Auxiliary Cancer Resource Center, Hospitality House and the Welcome/Information Desk.
In addition to their volunteer efforts, members of the Frye Volunteer Auxiliary support the mission of Frye Regional Medical Center through the implementation of numerous programs aimed at enhancing the patient’s experience, better serving the staff, and/or benefiting the community. These programs include:
Volunteers work with their own certified pet to provide cheer throughout the hospital.
Throughout the year, volunteers design and sew handmade quilts for infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. They also make stockings for all newborns at Christmas.
Each year, the Volunteer Auxiliary offers scholarships for local graduating seniors pursuing an education in the field of health care.
Infant Bereavement Program:
For families who may experience the tragedy of losing a baby, the volunteers offer beautiful, hand sewn gowns for the burial. The volunteers also maintain a list of resources and remembrances to aid grieving families.
Annual Book & Jewelry Sales:
Twice a year, volunteers schedule both book and jewelry sales at Frye Regional Medical Center for employees and visitors to enjoy. Proceeds from these sales are used to benefit a number of areas of the hospital. Proceeds helped to support the opening of Frye’s Auxiliary Cancer Resource Center which provides a variety of valuable informational resources for the convenience of cancer patients and their families.
Though our volunteers don’t expect recognition, at Frye we know they deserve it and do our best to say "thank you." To show our volunteers how much they are appreciated, two annual events are held each year in the spring and fall.
