Receiving a diagnosis of cancer can be an emotionally charged and confusing time for anyone. In addition to the support and information provided by your physicians and family, Frye’s certified cancer nurse navigators are available for an added measure of encouragement, education and assistance. Our team of cancer nurse navigators will listen to your needs and expectations, provide answers to your questions, and guide you through the care process – helping to coordinate and streamline your treatment.

Our cancer nurse navigators offer one-on-one information and support including:

• Help you and your family understand your cancer diagnosis
• Assist you in evaluating treatment options
• Educate you about treatment, medications, side effects and recovery
• Coordinate your appointments with various physicians and therapists
• Facilitate communication between you and your care team
• Refer you, if needed, to support programs and resources in the broader community
• Provide emotional support and guidance

Our navigators are registered nurses with additional training in cancer diagnosis and treatment – two navigators have specific training in breast cancer, while a third navigator is trained in colorectal cancers.

Of course, our cancer nurse navigator program is completely confidential, and the program is offered free of charge.

Support Groups

Frye Regional Medical Center provides education, support and recovery for patients and their families. Components of our program – great for the newly diagnosed as well as those who have completed treatment – include:

• Life Goes On   
  An educational support group featuring cancer-related topics. This group meets the third Monday of each month beginning at 6 P.M. at 1501 Tate Blvd in Hickory. For more information, please call (828) 315-3596.

• Breast Friends  
  Offers support to women fighting and surviving breast cancer.  This group meets on the second Monday of each month at 6:00 PM at Frye Care.  For more information please call (828) 315-3596.
  
• New Beginnings Yoga  
  Free yoga classes for breast cancer survivors are held on Tuesday evenings at 6pm at FryeCare Outpatient Imaging Center.  No registration is necessary, and mats are provided. (Supported by a grant from Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation)

• Look Good, Feel Better  
  This free program is designed to help women undergoing cancer treatment learn to cope and regain a sense of self confidence and control over their lives. Trained beauty experts help each patient address her specific skin, hair, and related appearance needs. To register for the next available session, click on the “Events” tab and select “Cancer Services” from the drop down menu.
  
• Fresh Start Smoking Cessation  
  Frye Regional Medical Center is offering Freshstart, the American Cancer Society's quit smoking program, as a free service to its patients and the general public. Developed by the American Cancer Society, this class helps empower participants to begin their journey to a tobacco-free life and covers issues such as weight control and coping strategies to help fight the urge to smoke. Frye Cancer Support Center 

The Frye Cancer Support Center is located at 328 North Center Street in Hickory, next to the hospital's emergency room. The newly renovated space includes warm, inviting meeting area and a library/media room with a computer workstation and up-to-date information for our patients and their caregivers. Our staff is available to provide you information on prevention, early detection, education and community resources.
