Frye Regional Medical Center Names 2025 Mercy Award Winner

May 19, 2025

HICKORY, NC (May 19, 2025) – Frye Regional Medical Center, a Duke LifePoint hospital, announces Jackie Mcelyea as the facility’s 2025 Mercy Award recipient. This prestigious award is presented annually across Lifepoint Health’s facilities to one employee who deeply embodies the spirit of compassion, selflessness and service to others and values on which the company was founded.

Established in 2001, the Mercy Award is an annual recognition program honoring the life and contributions of Scott Mercy, Lifepoint’s founding chairman and chief executive officer. It is considered the highest honor a Lifepoint employee can receive.

“At Frye Regional, our caring and compassionate team members are at the heart of advancing our mission of making communities healthier®, and Jackie Mcelyea is a shining example of this day in and day out,” said Philip Greene, MD, Chief Executive Officer of Frye Regional Medical Center. “We are proud to recognize his many contributions to caring for patients, supporting our hospital and serving our community. I’m grateful for Jackie’s positive influence and the example he sets for all of us.”

A Facilities Technician II with over 25 years experience in fire service and three decades in industrial maintenance, Mcelyea plays a critical role in ensuring Frye Regional operates safely and efficiently even in the most challenging circumstances. Whether maintaining complex mechanical systems or responding during snowstorms or holidays, his unwavering dedication reflects a deep sense of duty and care for his colleagues, community and the patients who trust Frye Regional.

His leadership was especially evident in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene in September 2024. As Assistant Fire Chief for Valmead Fire Department, Mcelyea worked tirelessly with his team to respond to widespread storm damage. When downed trees cut power to the hospital, he quickly coordinated the setup of backup generators, ensuring uninterrupted care and safety for patients and staff.

Outside of work, Mcelyea continues to make a profound impact. He and his partner serve as foster parents, providing a safe, loving home to children, many of whom have experienced trauma and instability. Currently, they care for four children, including one they formally adopted several years ago on her birthday – creating a new chapter of love and belonging.

Each facility winner, including Mcelyea, will be considered for Lifepoint’s 2025 companywide Mercy Award. The companywide winner will be announced this summer and honored during an August ceremony in Nashville, Tennessee.
