Frye Regional Medical Center Offers Lung Cancer Screening
June 05, 2025
HICKORY, NC (June 5, 2025) – Frye Regional Medical Center, a Duke LifePoint hospital, now offers low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening to help detect lung cancer in patients who meet specific eligibility criteria. This recommended yearly screening uses advanced, low-radiation X-ray technology to identify potentially cancerous spots in the lungs at an earlier, more treatable stage.
An LDCT scan provides high-quality imaging with less radiation than a traditional CT scan. The screening is quick—usually completed in under one minute—and more effective than a standard chest X-ray at detecting small nodules and early-stage lung cancer.
To qualify for lung screening, individuals must:
- Be between the ages of 50 and 77
- Have a history of heavy smoking (one pack of cigarettes per day for 20 years or two packs per day for 10 years)
- Be a current smoker or have quit smoking within the past 15 years
“This screening has the potential to help save lives by detecting lung cancer earlier, when treatment is more effective,” said Philip Greene, MD, Chief Executive Officer of Frye Regional Medical Center. “It reflects our continued commitment to advancing Frye Regional’s mission of making communities healthier® and ensuring access to high-quality care close to home.”
According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States, responsible for approximately 1 in 5 of all cancer deaths annually. More people die from lung cancer each year than from colon, breast and prostate cancers combined.
Frye Regional’s team supports individuals throughout the screening process, helping them understand the risks and benefits, insurance coverage and costs, screening results and any recommended next steps.
Individuals are encouraged to schedule an appointment with their primary care provider to discuss eligibility based on their smoking history, age and other risk factors.
