#WhyFrye – Del Starnes

June 19, 2025

Del Starnes, a Catawba County resident, has been managing atrial fibrillation (AFib) for several years. His treatment journey began with a cardioversion to restore a normal heart rhythm, but the results were short-lived. When his AFib returned just days later, his care team recommended a more lasting solution—an ablation procedure at Frye Regional Medical Center.

Nearly two years since the ablation, Del has remained free of AFib symptoms. A few months after the procedure, he opted to have a minimally invasive heart device implanted to reduce or eliminate the need for long-term blood thinners and further lower his risk of stroke.

Del describes both procedures as smooth and uneventful—in the best way possible. He experienced no complications and felt back to normal almost immediately.

“It really was like nothing had happened,” shared Del. “I didn’t have any pain or recovery issues.”

He believes the combination of the ablation and the implant have significantly improved his health and his peace of mind.

“Just knowing I’ve done everything I can to manage my condition gives me real confidence moving forward,” he said.

Del credits the team at Frye Regional for delivering expert, compassionate care that made each step of the process feel manageable and reassuring.

“The procedures gave me peace of mind and helped reduce the risks I was living with every day,” he shared. “That kind of confidence and security is hard to put a price on.”

As one of 400 patients to undergo this procedure at Frye Regional, Del is grateful to have access to advanced, experienced care close to home.
