#WhyFrye – Paige Monks’ Journey of Strength and Healing
October 06, 2025
October holds special meaning for Paige Monks. It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month and her own path to recovery is a testament to resilience, determination and hope.
Paige’s journey began unexpectedly in August 2023, when she discovered a lump on her left side despite having no family history of breast cancer. A biopsy confirmed multiple tumors with lymph node involvement. Just a week later, doctors found another lump on her right side, revealing an entirely different type of breast cancer. She underwent a double mastectomy, followed by chemotherapy and 30 rounds of radiation.
Radiation successfully treated the cancer but left Paige with lymphedema, a painful swelling and tightness in her left arm and chest. “It felt like a water balloon under my skin,” she recalls.
The condition limited her range of motion, making it impossible to lift her arm overhead. At a friend’s recommendation, Paige turned to occupational therapy at Frye Regional. With guidance, she learned specialized massage and stretching techniques to open the highways that allow fluid to drain. Regular therapy sessions and a dedicated home routine now help her stay active and pain-free.
Today, Paige embraces cycling and working as a hair stylist while managing lingering side effects from treatment, including joint pain and early menopause. She also gives back by compiling resource lists for newly diagnosed patients, helping them navigate the overwhelming first days after diagnosis.
“I’m grateful every day,” Paige says. “My surgeries were successful, and if I have a few sore joints, that’s okay. I’m here.”
Her story highlights both the importance of breast cancer awareness and the healing power of therapy, offering hope and encouragement to anyone facing a similar journey.
Frye Regional remains committed to survivors like Paige. Through its integrated cancer care and rehabilitation programs, the team helps individuals rebuild strength and independence so they can move forward with confidence and hope.
