A Life Transformed through Surgical Weight Loss

Amanda Keefer, a devoted mother of three from Burnsville, North Carolina, had battled weight challenges for most of her life. Describing herself as “never a small girl,” her weight fluctuated over the years, especially after having her first child at 18. She tried every diet program available, including Jenny Craig and Weight Watchers, spending what she calls “enough money to pay for surgery ten times over.”

Her turning point came during a family trip to Wilderness at the Smokies. While attempting to climb a 100-step tower with her youngest son, Amanda struggled just to complete it once. The physical toll was undeniable, and she realized she couldn’t keep living that way. At over 300 pounds and dealing with anxiety, depression and undiagnosed ADHD, Amanda knew it was time to make a permanent change.

Amanda was referred to Frye Regional’s Surgical Weight Loss program by a friend. From her first conversation with the team at the North Carolina Bariatric Institute, she knew she had found the right place. The staff became her constant support, guiding Amanda through the mental, emotional and physical preparations for surgery.

In 2021, Amanda underwent her procedure and has since lost nearly 120 pounds. She also quit smoking after 20 years and reclaimed her health and energy. A year after surgery, she returned to the same water park and climbed those 100 steps 40 times.

Today, Amanda is physically active, eats to fuel her body and fully participates in the lives of her children. She calls it “the best decision I’ve ever made” and encourages others to consider the life-changing possibilities of surgical weight loss.
