From Crutches to a 5K: A Comeback Story

What began as a fun day at a trampoline park with her daughter and a friend quickly took an unexpected turn when Jessica Prevette tore her ACL. Having experienced a previous ACL injury, she knew recovery would require both determination and the right care team.

Jessica, a nurse practitioner with FryeCare Cardiology, turned to Reid Russell, DO, an orthopedic surgeon with FryeCare Orthopedics & Neurosurgery. From the start, Dr. Russell provided a personalized and reassuring approach.

“Dr. Russell gave me several options and really took the time to explain each one,” Jessica said.

Together, they chose a quad tendon graft, and she began physical therapy prior to surgery to build strength and prepare for the best possible outcome.

Because this was her second ACL injury, Dr. Russell navigated existing scar tissue and prior surgical tunnels to successfully reconstruct her ligament. The case highlights both its complexity and the expertise behind her care.

Following her procedure in January 2025, Jessica remained focused on recovery. She returned to work just two weeks later – on crutches – and continued her rehabilitation through therapy at Frye

Regional. By early April, she was walking without assistance, steadily regaining strength and mobility.

Just a few months later, Jessica reached a milestone she once questioned – running again.

“I didn’t know if I’d be able to run like I used to, especially after a second ACL injury,” she shared. “I’m so thankful I can.”

Today, Jessica has regained range of motion comparable to before her injury – an outcome she knows isn’t guaranteed. Now, she’s preparing to run alongside her daughter and friend as part of the City of Hickory 5K series presented by Frye Regional.

“I tell my patients to stay active and exercise regularly,” Jessica added. “If I’m going to preach it, I want to practice it.”

Jessica’s journey reflects both her determination and the coordinated, expert care she received at Frye Regional – helping her return to the life she loves.
