A Second Chance to Move: Advanced Spine Surgery Restores Mobility for Hickory Patient

For several years, Hickory resident Maria Mosteller lived with increasing difficulty walking and persistent neck pain that gradually interfered with daily life. An active person who enjoys gardening, fishing and spending time outdoors, Maria began noticing worsening weakness in her legs and difficulty moving the way she once could.

“I’ve always been someone who likes to stay busy and be outside,” Maria said. “But it got to the point where even simple things around the house became really hard.”

After several evaluations to determine the cause of her symptoms, imaging revealed significant compression in her cervical spine. Maria was referred to the FryeCare Orthopedics & Neurosurgery team, where she met Paul Boone, MD, a board-certified neurosurgeon specializing in minimally invasive and robotic-assisted spine procedures.

Dr. Boone determined that Maria was a candidate for artificial cervical disc replacement, an advanced surgical option designed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord while preserving natural motion in the neck.

“Traditionally, neck surgery for this condition involves fusing two vertebrae together, which can limit movement,” Dr. Boone explained. “Artificial cervical disc replacement allows us to decompress the spinal cord while maintaining motion between the vertebrae, which may reduce stress on surrounding levels of the spine.”

Artificial cervical disc replacement is one of several advanced spine procedures now available through Frye Regional’s neurosurgery program.

In October 2025, Maria underwent surgery at Frye Regional Medical Center, and the procedure was successful. She returned home the following day.

Today, Maria says the difference compared to before surgery is significant.

“I can stand up straight again and move my neck much more naturally,” she said. “The sharp pain I used to feel isn’t the same anymore. It’s much more manageable, and I can move around better than before.”

Maria also recalls feeling reassured by the care she received from the Frye Regional team.

“They treated me like glass the whole time I was there,” she said. “Dr. Boone and the entire team were wonderful. They took great care of me.”

As Maria continues healing, she remains grateful for the opportunity to regain mobility and improve her quality of life.

“I would absolutely recommend it,” she said. “If someone needs this type of surgery, they’re in great hands here.”

Dr. Boone joined Frye Regional to expand access to advanced brain and spine care in the Hickory region. His expertise in motion-preserving spine procedures, including artificial cervical disc replacement, allows patients to receive highly specialized neurosurgical care close to home.
